Truck Show Latino
2008 Winners

New Winners Emerege At Overdrive’s Pomona Pride & Polish

Mark Leekley smiles like a kid giddy holding the Christmas present he’d dreamed of finding under the tree. Leekley, a third-year company driver for Hawthorne Power Systems in San Diego, prizes his first Pride & Polish trophies—a third in both  “Working Bobtail 1990-1996” and “Interior Cab Only” awarded at the 2008 Pomona, California, show.
Although they are not Firsts, Leekley prizes them highly because they mark his first truck competition. And the day before the October 18-19 Pride & Polish show opened, his Freightliner was axle-deep in fire ash as he delivered emergency generators to a remote water pumping station whose power lines were felled by a big SoCal forest fire still burning nearby.

Leekley’s truck is one of nearly three dozen rolling into the Los Angeles Country Fair grounds to be part of Overdrive’s Pride & Polish competition in conjunction with the annual Truck Show Latino and Construction Truck & Equipment Expo.

Among those, Mike Maggini’s ’98 yellow-and-green flamed 379 Pete, “Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy,” which held claim to Pride & Polish Best Limited Mileage Truck Interior. Meanwhile Sandvik driver Isaac Agular rolled out of the fairgrounds in his immaculately done, burgundy ’92 379 Pete appropriately called “Still Deliriouz,” with his sleeper’s bunk overflowing with shelf armor including Best of Show Working Bobtail trophy and trophy from Mobil Delvac for Best Working Class Engine.

Another  custom rig to pull down one of the coveted  “Best of Show” lighted trophies is Mike Salinas’ black, orange, and blue-flamed extended-hood 379 Pete, built and shown by John’s Truck Repair. The JTR team’s efforts captured Pride & Polish Best Limited Mileage Paint .

Combo rigs also turned a lot of heads, especially Ryan Hooten’s black-cherry 379 Pete hooked to a set of custom flatbed hay trailers. His truck took top honors in combo paint and graphics, best OEM sleeper interior, and  a second place for best working class engine.
In fact the SoCal show was loaded with artisanship and craftsmanship, making the annual Pomona Pride & Polish Truck Competition special—and what brings the best of the working class and the show class custom rigs together under one roof.
